Understanding Your Home Content Insurance: Covered Items vs. Exclusions
Items Included in Your Hausrat Insurance:
Home contents (Hausrat) include all items that serve for private use or consumption in your household. Valuables and cash are also considered part of your household contents (Hausrat). Special conditions and compensation limits apply to them: Cash, as well as money loaded on cards or other data carriers; Documents, including savings books and other securities; Jewelry, gemstones, pearls, stamps, coins, medals, and all items made of gold or platinum; Furs, hand-knotted carpets, tapestries, and art objects; Antiques that are over 100 years old, excluding furniture. The following items are also considered home contents (Hausrat): Items integrated into the building (e.g., built-in furniture and fitted kitchens). This applies only if you as a tenant or homeowner have procured or taken them over at your own expense. You must bear the risk for these items; Add-on furniture and add-on kitchens that are serially prefabricated and adapted to the building with minimal installation effort; Self-propelled wheelchairs, lawnmowers, ride-on mowers, go-karts, model and toy vehicles, as long as they are not subject to mandatory insurance; Canoes, rowboats, folding and inflatable boats, including their engines, as well as surfboards, parachutes, and non-motorized kites; Tools and furnishings used exclusively for professional or commercial purposes by you or a person living with you in the same household. Commercial goods and sample collections are excluded from this.
Pets, i.e., animals that are kept in your apartment in accordance with the following conditions (e.g., fish, cats, birds). The insurance location is the apartment specified in the insurance policy. The apartment includes: Rooms used for living purposes that allow independent living. These are the areas of a building used exclusively by you for private purposes. The use by persons living with you in the same household is equivalent. Rooms used exclusively for professional or commercial purposes are not part of the apartment. Rooms that are only accessible through the apartment are excluded (so-called home offices within the apartment).
Items Excluded in Your Hausrat Insurance:
Building components, unless they are specified under the following conditions:
Items integrated into the building (e.g., built-in furniture and fitted kitchens). This applies only if you as a tenant or homeowner have procured or taken them over at your own expense. You must bear the risk for these items.
Items brought in by the building owner or transferred into their ownership, for which they bear the risk. If these items are subsequently replaced by you as a tenant or homeowner, they are also not insured.
Motor vehicles of all kinds and trailers, regardless of their mandatory insurance, as well as parts and accessories of motor vehicles and trailers, unless they fall under the following conditions:
Self-propelled wheelchairs, lawnmowers, ride-on mowers, go-karts, model and toy vehicles, as long as they are not subject to mandatory insurance.
Aircraft and watercraft, regardless of their mandatory insurance, including non-installed parts, unless they fall under the following conditions:
Self-propelled wheelchairs, lawnmowers, ride-on mowers, go-karts, model and toy vehicles, as long as they are not subject to mandatory insurance; Canoes, rowboats, folding and inflatable boats, including their engines, as well as surfboards, parachutes, and non-motorized kites.
Home contents (Hausrat) of tenants and subtenants in your apartment, unless these have been provided to them by you. Items in private possession that are insured under a separate insurance policy (e.g., for jewelry and furs, art objects, musical instruments, or hunting and sporting firearms).

What is the Definition of Fire, Lightning, and More in Insurance Terms?
Fire
Fire is a blaze that has originated without an intended source or has left such a source and is capable of spreading on its own.
Heat-Related Damage
Heat-related damage refers to fire damage occurring to insured items when exposed to a heating source, either for processing or other purposes. This also includes items in which heat or fire is generated, transmitted, or conducted.
Lightning
Lightning is the direct transfer of a lightning strike to objects. Overvoltage, overcurrent, or short-circuit damage to electrical installations and devices is only covered when a lightning strike occurs directly within buildings where insured items are located or in antenna systems on the property where the insured residence is situated.
Overvoltage Due to Lightning
In addition to coverage for lightning damage, we also provide compensation for damage to insured electrical installations and devices caused by overvoltage, overcurrent, and short-circuits resulting from a lightning strike or other atmospheric electricity.
Explosion
An explosion is a sudden release of force resulting from the expansion of gases or vapors. The explosion of a container (such as a boiler or pipeline) is only considered under specific conditions. The vessel's wall must rupture to such an extent that there is a sudden equalization of pressure inside and outside the container. If an explosion is triggered inside a container by a chemical reaction, the rupture of its wall is not necessary. Also included in coverage are explosion damages caused by munitions from past wars (unexploded ordnance).
Implosion
Implosion is the sudden, unforeseen collapse of a hollow structure due to external overpressure resulting from internal underpressure.
Deflagration
Deflagration is the conversion of gases, vapors, and dust with low speed and pressure effects.
Impact and Crash of an Aircraft, its Parts, or Cargo
Coverage includes the impact and crash of an aircraft, as well as the impact and crash of its parts or cargo.
What Does External Insurance Mean, and What Does It Cover?
Outside the insured location, insured items have worldwide coverage under the following conditions:
- The items are your property or are used by you. This also applies to items of persons living with you in the same household.
- The items are only temporarily outside the insured location. Periods exceeding three months are not considered temporary.
- Compensation for each insurance claim is limited to 20 percent of the agreed insurance sum.
A General Overview of Home Contents Insurance
What is Home Contents Insurance?
Home contents insurance is a type of insurance that covers the policyholder against the loss or damage of personal property within their house or apartment. This may include items such as furniture, electronics, clothing, jewelry, household appliances, and other personal belongings. The insurance typically covers damage caused by various events, including: Fire Water damage Storm and hail Burglary/theft
Home contents insurance provides protection against financial losses in the event of unexpected incidents that affect your personal property. It can be especially helpful in cases of burglary, fire, or natural disasters.
What is the Difference Between Home Contents Insurance and Building Insurance?
Home contents insurance and building insurance are two different types of insurance that cover different aspects of housing. Here are the main differences between these two types of insurance:
Home Contents Insurance:
Home contents insurance covers the personal possessions of the policyholder located within the apartment or house. This includes furniture, electronics, clothing, jewelry, household appliances, and other personal items. It offers protection against damage or loss caused by burglary, theft, fire, water and storm damage, as well as vandalism. This insurance reimburses the policyholder for the cost of repairing or replacing their personal items if they are damaged or stolen due to covered events. Home contents insurance is typically intended for renters who are not responsible for the building itself but only for their personal belongings.
Building Insurance:
Building insurance covers the actual structure in which you live, including the building's structure, foundation, roof, walls, doors, and windows. It provides protection against damage from fire, storms, hail, floods, earthquakes, and other structural damage to the building. This insurance reimburses the policyholder for the cost of repairs or rebuilding the structure if it is damaged by covered events. Building insurance is typically intended for homeowners who are responsible for the maintenance and repairs of their residential structure.
Who Should Consider Home Contents Insurance?
Home contents insurance can be beneficial for various groups of people, including:
Renters:
Renters can benefit from home contents insurance since they are typically not responsible for the building they live in. The insurance protects their personal possessions, such as furniture, electronics, clothing, and other items, from damage or loss due to burglary, theft, fire, water and storm damage, and vandalism.
Condominium Owners:
If you own a condominium, you are generally responsible for the maintenance of the interior of your unit. Home contents insurance can protect your personal belongings from the risks mentioned above.
Individuals with Valuable Personal Property:
If you own valuable items such as jewelry, artworks, antiques, or expensive electronics, home contents insurance can help safeguard these valuable possessions. However, you should ensure that you accurately assess the value of these items and consider additional coverage if needed.
Singles and Families:
Home contents insurance provides protection for both individuals and families, especially if you have many personal belongings in your home.
Students and Young Adults:
Even young adults living in rental apartments or student accommodations can benefit from home contents insurance to protect their personal belongings.
What Does Home Contents Insurance Cost?
The cost of home contents insurance can vary significantly and depends on various factors, including:
Coverage Scope:
The extent of coverage you desire affects the cost. If you have expensive personal property or want additional coverage options, such as natural disaster coverage or bicycle theft coverage, the price increases. Insurance Company:
Premiums can vary by insurance company. To get the best home contents insurance, you can now apply online with Techafull.Techafull Home Contents Insurance offers customers competitive prices and comprehensive coverage.
Deductible:

Security Measures:
Home security measures, such as alarm systems, secure locks, and smoke detectors, can help reduce costs.
Insurance History:
Your insurance history, including any prior claims, can affect costs. We pay attention to the number of previous claims in the last five years.
Example
Max Mustermann and His Home Contents Insurance
Max Mustermann is a 35-year-old man who lives in a rental apartment in the city. He has taken out home contents insurance to protect his personal property from unexpected damages and losses. Here are some typical scenarios in which Max could benefit from his home contents insurance:
Burglary:
One day, Max returns home to find that his apartment has been burglarized. His electronic devices, jewelry, and some other valuables have been stolen. Thanks to his home contents insurance, Max can file a claim and receive compensation for the loss of his stolen items.
Water Damage:
A burst pipe in the apartment above Max's unit results in water entering his apartment, damaging his furniture and electronic devices. Max's home contents insurance also covers water damage, so he is financially protected for the repair or replacement of his damaged items.
Fire Damage:
An unfortunate incident leads to a fire breaking out in Max's apartment, destroying a significant portion of his belongings. His home contents insurance covers the damage and helps him replace his lost possessions.
Natural Disaster:
Max's apartment is hit by a severe storm that leads to flooding and damages his personal items. Home contents insurance also covers damages from natural disasters such as floods, storms, and earthquakes, as long as it is specified in the policy.
Theft Outside the Home:
While on vacation, Max falls victim to pickpocketing, resulting in the theft of his wallet. In this case, Max can file an insurance claim since many home contents insurance policies also cover the theft of personal property outside the insured area of the home.
This examples illustrate how home contents insurance has helped Max Mustermann protect his personal belongings in various unexpected situations. Techafull's comprehensive home contents insurance is available for online purchase at budget-friendly rates.

FAQ
-
Are mobile phones also covered by insurance?
Yes, all phones in the household are insured against the insured risks. If a phone is damaged, e.g. due to a fire, or stolen in a burglary, it will be reimbursed. Pure breakage or simple loss are not covered, however.
-
Will my Home Content insurance continue if I move?
If the policyholder changes the flat, the insurance cover is transferred to the new flat. During the change of residence, insurance cover exists in both flats. The insurance cover in the previous flat expires at the latest three months after the start of the move.
-
What are the contents of Insured Costs?
In addition to the actual property damage, additional costs are often incurred even in the case of minor damage. The household insurance does not leave you in the lurch here either. It covers numerous costs, such as damage mitigation costs, clean-up costs, hotel costs, transport and storage costs if the flat is uninhabitable and things have to be moved out, lock change costs if a key to the flat is lost due to an insured event, as well as security costs if the flat cannot be locked due to damaged doors and windows, or alternatively costs for temporary repairs if this serves to protect the household effects. These and other costs are precisely defined in the conditions.
-
What additional options are there for home content insurance?
You can extend your insurance cover with the following modules:
-Extended natural hazards (elementary): Damage due to flooding and backwater (also as a result of heavy rain), earthquake, subsidence, landslide, snow pressure, avalanches and volcanic eruption. -Bicycle theft: Your bicycle is covered by the home content insurance against burglary from the insured dwelling (incl. cellar). To be insured against simple theft when you are on the road, you need this additional module. -Glass protection: With this additional module, you can insure all glass in your household (except hollow glass such as vases, lamps and drinking glasses) against glass breakage of any kind.
-
Do I have to have a smoke and heat detector installed in order to get home content insurance?
Smoke detectors save lives, so we recommend installing them. However, this is not a precondition for insurance cover.
-
Can I get Home Content insurance even if I am not a homeowner?
Yes, of course. The Home content insurance protects your household effects - regardless of whether you are the tenant or the owner of the insured dwelling.
-
What happens to the agreed waiver of underinsurance when I change my apartment?
When you change your apartment, the previously agreed waiver of underinsurance automatically transfers to the new apartment. We waive the objection of underinsurance if all the following conditions are met:
The living area corresponds to the living area stated in the insurance policy at the time of the insurance event.
The insurance sum is determined as follows: The number of square meters of living space is multiplied by at least the value we specify to be able to agree to the waiver of underinsurance.
There is no other home contents insurance policy without a waiver of underinsurance for the same insured location.
-
What happens if the living area of the new apartment is larger?
If the living area of the new apartment is larger, the waiver of underinsurance remains valid for up to two months after the start of the move. Within this period, the insurance policy must be adjusted to the actual number of square meters. After this deadline, the waiver of underinsurance will no longer apply if no adjustment has been made by that time.
-
Is it important to adjust the insurance policy to the new living area in a timely manner?
Yes, it is important to adjust the insurance policy to the actual number of square meters in a timely manner. If this is not done within two months after the start of the move, the waiver of underinsurance will no longer apply.
